Xawaash, the spice mix this site is named after, goes into Somali meats, stews and soups; the word comes from the Arabic hawa’ij, ‘essentials’. Somali food itself isn’t fiery, so basbaas, the hot sauce, is served on the side for everyone to add to taste.
