Sweet Potatoes (Bataato Macaan) Patates Douces

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes - Patates Douces

If you are going to have a dessert that has butter and sugar, you might as well have this dessert. At least the other half of the dessert (the sweet potato) is nutritious. Sweet potatoes pack more nutrition than most other vegetables. They are high in fibre, protein, and complex carbohydrates. They are also delicious and versatile. The type that was grown in Somalia was the purple skin, white flesh variety. It is great in both savoury and sweet dishes.

This dessert is one of our favourites and it can be served either warm or at room temperature. Make sure you have other people to share it with since it is very easy to overindulge, and be fair when portioning out the caramelized bits at the bottom of the pan. A small portion at the end of a meal will provide for a warm and comforting dessert.

Ingredients:

4 Purple-skin sweet potatoes
1 cup (237 mL) Water
¾ cup (150 g) Sugar (adjust to taste)
4 Tbsp (60 mL) Butter (for a Vegan option, substitute with oil)
¼ tsp (1.25 mL) Cardamom

Ingrédients:

4 Patates Douces à peau violette
1 mesure d’Eau

Directions:

Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them about ¼ inch thick. Place the sliced potatoes, sugar, water, and cardamom in a pot set on medium high heat. Cover the pot and cook for about 45 minutes or until the potatoes becomes translucent and the sauce thickens.

Instructions:
