Some people eat a papaya because of its health benefits: for aiding digestion, for balancing stomach acid, for helping prevent colon cancer, and for being a good laxative. We love eating papayas because they are delicious. If anything can embody the tropics, it is a papaya! Feast your eyes with this beautiful fruit and don’t deny yourself a taste of its sweet and juicy flesh. It will put you in a cheerful mood.

A ripe papaya has a little give and is yellowish in colour. After removing the seeds, you can eat it as is. However, if you cut a papaya before it has fully ripened, all is not lost. Sprinkle it with a little sugar and spritz it with lemon juice, then let it marinade for ten minutes. You will have an amazing papaya fruit salad. A slightly under-ripe papaya or an over-ripe one can also be successfully turned into a papaya juice project. Blend it with crushed ice and it will quench a life-size thirst.

Papaya seeds are believed to have many health benefits but they need to be processed before you can eat them.

Ingredients

1 cup = 237 mL · 1 Tbsp = 15 mL · 1 tsp = 5 mL. All are level measurements.

Method

Tap a step to mark it done.

  1. Cut the papaya in half lengthwise and scrape out the seeds. Using a spoon scoop the flesh and put in a blender together with the ice cubes.

  2. Add the powdered sugar, lemon juice, and the water. Blend into a smooth, slushy puree and serve.

  3. Substitutions: use orange juice or pineapple juice instead of water. Use honey instead of sugar, or leave it out altogether.
