And so goes the song (by Faarax Siidow Faarax), a man listing his riches, trying to woo the woman he loves. A few posts ago, his fellow countryman, who lives in the semi-arid parts of Somalia, was dangling oodkac (jerky-style beef cubes) to entice his beloved. While oodkac is precious for nomads, it is potatoes, pumpkins and plantains that are prized by the inhabitants of the fertile south, the land irrigated by the rivers Jubba and Shabelle. What both these men prove is that just like a man, the way to a woman’s heart is also through her stomach.
We love Somalia, its arid and its fertile, and we love plantains just as much as we love oodkac. We did a post on plantain stew and in this post, we present yet another way of enjoying this delicious fruit. This baked plantain dish is a very simple yet elegant looking dessert.
Ingredients:
(Tbsp is a tablespoon; tsp is a teaspoon)
(1 cup = 237 mL = 2.4 dl; 1 Tbsp = 15 mL; 1 tsp = 5 mL); all are level measurements
- 2 Tbsp (30 mL) Unsalted butter
- ¼ cup (50 g) Brown sugar (packed)
- 1 cup (237 mL) Water
- 2 Tbsp (30 mL) Vanilla essence or extract
- 1 Pinch Salt – Optional
- ¼ tsp (1.25 mL) Ground cinnamon
- 2 Plantains (ripe)
Directions:
- In a pot or pan set on medium heat, combine the butter, brown sugar, and water. Stir well and then boil for 2 minutes.
- Add the vanilla and turn off the heat.
- Slice the plantains into ½ inch (2.5 cm) slices.
- Arrange the plantain slices in a baking dish as shown.
- Pour some of the syrup on top, coating the plantain slices.
- Sprinkle a pinch of salt on top (if desired), then sprinkle the ground cinnamon on top. Bake in a preheated oven for 45 minutes at 400°F/204°C.

- 2 QW (30 mL) Buuro aan cusbo lahayn
- ¼ koob (50 g) Sokor maroon (faraha lagu riixay)
- 1 koob (237 mL) Biyo
- 2 QW (30 mL) Faniilla aan aalkolo lahayn
- pinch Cusbo
- ¼ qy (1.25 mL) Qorfe shiidan
- 2 Moos bukiini (bukeeni) (bisil)
Diyaarinta:
- Digsi ama bir dab dhexdhexaad ah saaran, ku rid buurada, sokorta, biyahana ku shub. Si fiican u walaaq, kaddibna 2 daqiiqo karkari.
- Faniilada ku dar, kaddibna dabka ka demi.
- Mooska u jarjar gaballo ½ inch (2.5 cm).
- Gaballada mooska waxaad ku saftaa saxan foornada loogu talagalay.
- Waxaad kor uga shubtaa sirabka, adigoo sirabka qaar ka reebanaysid.
- Far iyo suul oo cusbo ah kor uga bilbil (haddaad doontid waad ka dhaafi kartaa). Qorfaha la shiiday kor uga bilbil. Ku dub foorno lasii kululeeyay 400°F/204°C muddo 45 daqiiqo.

Et ainsi de suite dans cette chanson (de Faarax Siidow Faarax), un homme fait l’inventaire de ses richesses, pour courtiser la femme qu’il aime. Quelques recettes plus tôt, un campagnard, des régions semi-arides de Somalie, présentait son oodkac (cubes de boeuf séché) pour attirer sa bien-aimée. L’oodkac est précieux pour les nomades, alors que ce sont les patates, les citrouilles, et les plantains qui ont de la valeur pour la habitants du sud fertile, terre irriguée par les rivières Jubba et Shabelle. Ces deux histoires montrent que, comme pour un homme, le meilleur moyen de ravir le coeur d’une femme est de passer par son estomac.
Nous aimons la Somalie, son côté aride et son côté fertile, et nous aimons les plantains autant que nous aimons oodkac. Nous avons déjà publié une recette de ragoût de plantains et dans celle-ci, nous vous présentons une autre façon de déguster ce fruit délicieux. Ce plat de plantains au four est un dessert un très simple mais très élégant.

Ingrédients:
(cs est cuillère à soupe; cc est cuillère à café)
(1 mesure = 237 mL = 2.4 dl; 1 cs = 15 mL; 1 cc = 5 mL); mesures à ras
- 2 cs (30 mL) de Beurre Doux
- ¼ mesure (50 g) de Sucre Brun (tassé)
- 1 mesure (237 mL) d’Eau
- 2 cs (30 mL) d’Essence de vanille
- 1 Pincée de Sel
- ¼ cc (1.25 mL) de Cannelle en Poudre
- 2 Plantains mûrs
Instructions:
- Mettre le beurre, le sucre brun et l’eau dans une casserole chauffée à feu moyen. Bien mélanger et faire bouillir 2 minutes.
- Ajouter la vanille et couper le feu.
- Découper les plantains en tranches de ½ pouce (1.25 cm).
- Ranger les tranches de plantains dans un plat creux comme ci-dessus.
- Verser le sirop dessus, pour recouvrir les tranches de plantains.
- Saupoudrer une pincée de sel (si vous le souhaitez), puis saupoudrer la cannelle en poudre par dessus.
Cuire 45 minutes au four préchauffé à 400°F/204°C.

في قدر او مقلاة على نار متوسطة، توضع الزبدة، ثم السكر البني والماء. يحرك المزيج جيدا ثم يغلى لمدة دقيقتين. | -1 |
